XLVI Zakopane School of Physics
Breaking Frontiers: Submicron Structures in Physics and Biology
will be held in Zakopane (Poland) from 16th to 21st May, 2011.
The symposium is organized by the Institute of Nuclear Physics Polish Academy of Sciences in Krakow.
Our symposium, for historical reason called School, has been organized since 1963.
This year the School will cover the following topics:
* Low dimensional materials: from design, characterization to applications
- design, synthesis and characterization of nanostructured materials
- coatings, multilayers, thin films, nanoparticles
- nanopatterning – pre- and post-growth processing, self-assembly and self-organization
- biological applications of nanostructured materials and nanoscaled magnetoelectronics
* Biophysics and medical applications
- DNA, cell and tissue damage
- influence of external factors on cells and tissues properties
- biofilms and biomaterials, bio-markers and bio-sensors
- molecular and intercellular interactions
* Environment and protection
- photosynthesis
- heavy metal stress, pollution, corrosion
- protection mechanisms evolved by living organisms
- monitoring and protection
- renewable sources of energy
According to School tradition the research on the above topics was performed using nuclear, ion beam and other techniques in particular: Mossbauer spectroscopy, Perturbed Angular Correlations, PIXE, Channeling, RBS, Synchrotron Radiation X-ray Fluorescence, XANES, InfraRed Spectroscopy, and Atomic Force Microscopy. However, this time the other techniques are also welcomed. The School program is directed to students and young scientists to give them the opportunity to present their work, exchange their experience and to discuss the scientific problems with experienced lecturers. The scientific program will cover a broad range of topics in invited talks (45 minutes) and seminars (20 minutes). Short oral presentations will be selected out of the abstracts that should be submitted to the Symposium e-mail address: zakopane2011@ifj.edu.pl . Extended deadline for submitting abstracts is April 17th, 2011. Contributions not accepted for the oral presentation may be presented during the poster session.
